I’m not into politics, but I do think politicians are definitely interesting folks to photograph. They are all characters of some sort. I photographed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney during a visit to the Microsoft campus last fall while I was still in a staff photographer position for a newspaper group. After taking the obligatory images I knew the editors wanted, I made a visual character study that I believed would have a longer shelf life than the local visit that day. As we enter the final throes of an election year, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites… and yes, those are sheep on his tie.

I wanted to thank take a moment and thank all the veterans we have served our country. I’ve spent part of today thinking about and remembering my grandfather who served in World War II. Above, is a veteran, Hu Riley, that I have had the honor to photograph more than once who is the subject in late photographer Robert Capa’s D-Day image of a soldier in the surf. Again, my appreciation to all who have served.

In my career I’m happy to have had the opportunity to photograph MLB All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners, but today I was thrilled to be at the ballpark as a fan to take my son to his first baseball game and the home opener for the Mariners’ season at Safeco Field. Enjoy a quick photo gallery of Ichiro from my image archive in celebration of the national pastime and the boys of summer. More images after the jump…

Over the weekend a few people I have had the pleasure of photographing did some cool stuff… First on Saturday New York Knicks Boston Celtics guard (and former Washington Husky) Nate Robinson became the first person to become 3-time NBA Dunk Contest Champion. You can check out the video over at ESPN.com. Below is a portrait of Nate Robinson at his agent’s office in Post Alley in downtown Seattle.

And then on Sunday night, curling and Winter Olympic fever hit The Simpsons. U.S. national champion curlers Brady and Cristin Clark were technical advisors for the episode, and were part of an editorial assignment I shot for Seattle Metropolitan magazine.

That cheering you hear is myself with fellow fans of the Seattle Mariners, as they officially announced today a five-year contract extension for their 23-year-old ace pitcher Felix Hernandez. These images from my archive are from a start in King Felix’s rookie season in 2005. Making moves that could get them back on top of the AL West. Pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in a couple weeks, and the boys of summer return to the field. More on the big-money contract for Hernandez here on the seattlepi.com and espn.com.

As Pete Carroll was introduced as the new coach of the Seattle Seahawks, I decided to dig through the photo archive for a shot from his days at USC and all those great Trojan teams perennially on top of the Pac-10. You can read more about the hire at the Seattle P-I, Seattle Times and ESPN. Interested to see where the ‘Hawks go with Carroll at the helm…
